What To Actually Do On Maternity Leave — Beyond The Baby, Beyond The Lists, Beyond What Anyone Told You Was Possible

The maternity leave list exists in a thousand versions online and they are all the same list. This is a different one.

The maternity leave list exists in approximately one thousand versions online, and they are all more or less the same list. Establish a routine. Sleep when the baby sleeps. Meal prep when you have the energy. Take gentle walks. Connect with other new mothers. Do the online course you never had time for.

These are sensible suggestions. Some of them are genuinely helpful. None of them account for who you actually are.

You are not a woman who needs a list of approved activities for her maternity leave. You are a woman in the middle of the most profound transformation of your adult life, with more intellectual and creative and emotional capacity than you have ever had access to — and a cultural framework around new motherhood that is almost entirely unprepared to support what you are actually capable of.

First: Understand What You Are In

Matrescence. The word most women on maternity leave have never heard. The complete psychological, neurological and identity transformation of becoming a mother. As profound as adolescence. As disorienting. And as rich with potential as any period in a woman’s adult life.

Your brain is literally restructuring itself right now. The neural reorganisation of matrescence increases emotional range, deepens empathy, heightens pattern recognition and expands creative capacity in ways that are genuinely measurable. You are not a depleted version of your pre-baby self. You are a different — expanded, reconfigured, more complex — version of yourself. And the maternity leave that honours that truth looks very different from the list that tells you to sleep when the baby sleeps.

What This Season Is Actually Asking of You

Your matrescence is asking you to become. Not to maintain, not to manage, not to survive — to become. To allow the identity destabilisation of new motherhood to work on you in the direction it is trying to go, rather than fighting it back toward the familiar shape of who you were before.

This requires giving yourself permission to have an inner life during the most outwardly demanding season you have ever experienced. To follow the thoughts that arrive at 3am. To take seriously the ideas that surface when you are feeding or walking or simply existing in the ambient space of new motherhood. To ask yourself — genuinely, with real curiosity — what do I want to make of this?

The Creative Work of Matrescence

The woman in her matrescence has access to a specific form of creative intelligence that she has not had before and will not have in the same way again. It comes from the emotional porousness of the season — the particular openness to feeling, to meaning, to the profound questions about life and legacy and what we want to pass on — that pregnancy and early motherhood create.

This intelligence wants to make things. Not just babies, though babies are magnificent. Ideas. Songs. Visions. Plans. Declarations. The flag of her family. The society she would build if someone handed her the blueprint. The rite of passage she will create for her child’s adolescence. These are not idle fantasies. They are the outputs of a mind operating at its most expansive.

You have the most creative mind of your life right now. The question is not how to manage maternity leave. It is what to make of it.

What Bloom Makes Possible

Bloom is the IMAGENIQ programme for women in their matrescence. It asks you to use this season — not after this season, not when the baby sleeps through the night, not when you have your energy back and your identity sorted — now. In the beautiful, chaotic, extraordinary middle of it.

Nine missions. Nine invitations into the creative work that this season is asking of you. Write something beautiful for your baby. Design the family you are becoming. Imagine the world you want her to inherit. Ask the questions that the maternity leave list never thought to ask.

This is what to do on maternity leave. Not instead of the routine and the walks and the mothers’ group. Alongside them. In the spaces this season creates — the 2am quiet, the feeding chair stillness, the particular suspended quality of a new mother’s time that belongs to nobody’s schedule.

You have the most creative mind of your life right now. Give it something worthy of what it can do.
